How to measure your dog for an airline crate.

If your dog is taking a trip by air this summer then it is vital that they travel in a crate that is approved by IATA and the airline that they are flying with. The Vari Kennel by Petmate meets IATA requirements and comes with appropriate foods and water bowls and labels.

The IATA Live Animals Regulations (LAR) is the global standard and the essential guide to transporting animals by air in a safe, humane and in a cost-effective manner. Whether you are a shipper, a freight forwarder, an airline, an animal care professional or a pet owner the LAR is a must for transporting animals humanely and in compliance with airline regulations and animal welfare standards. For further information on this  go to the IATA website at http://www.iata.org/whatwedo/cargo/live-animals/pets/Pages/index.aspx

We recommend that you check your airline’s requirements well in advance of the date you and your dog are flying.   It is also important for your dog’s safety and comfort that the crate is the correct size for them.  Here is some guidance on how to measure your dog so that you buy the correct sized crate

How to ensure the correct size container for your pet

A. Length in cm = Nose to root of tail – tail excluded

B. Height in cm = Floor to top of head while standing
C. Width in cm = At the widest point

These measurements will ensure that your pet will have sufficient space, stand up and lie down comfortably.
